The Gift People Text You About: Hand-Cut Fudge From a Minnesota Train Depot

Most gifts get a polite thank-you and a shelf. This one gets a photo and a text back. It is made four ingredients at a time, in a copper kettle, by a young maker in a restored train depot on the shore of Lake Superior.

Most of us have sent the safe gift. The candle, the gift card, the basket that looks like every other basket. It is received, it is thanked for, and it is forgotten by the weekend. The gifts people actually remember have a story behind them, and a face. For a growing number of Midwest families, that gift has become a box of fudge from a train depot in Two Harbors, Minnesota.

Callie Swanson learned to make copper-kettle fudge during the lockdown of 2020, at twenty-one. Her family had just restored Burlington Station, a 7,000 square foot historic train depot on the North Shore of Lake Superior, complete with a 130 foot mural of the family's history and 5,000 feet of model train track running through the retail floor. She turned the gift shop into a working candy kitchen and opened on Memorial Day 2021. Three years later the kitchen ships boxes across the country, still made the same way: four ingredients, two hours in the kettle, cut by hand, and shipped within 48 hours so it never sits in a warehouse.

Before you send it

Will it arrive fresh in summer heat?

Yes. Orders ship Monday through Wednesday in insulated mailers and arrive firm. If anything melts in transit, we replace it free.

Can I send it straight to the recipient?

Yes. Ship it directly to their door. Every box is packed to arrive looking like a gift, not a grocery order.

What makes it worth more than supermarket fudge?

It is cooked in a copper kettle, four ingredients, two hours, and cut by hand within 48 hours of shipping. Supermarket fudge is extruded by machine and sits for months. You can taste the difference.

Send a gift they'll remember, not return.
